A Tropical and Productive First Day!

By Kara Anderson and Tess Pedemonti

Hey guys!!

Today all of the groups split up and conquered so many tasks. We had a fantastic first day. Yes of course, the weather was amazing! But we really did God's work out there.

Two teams went to a school serving grades k-12 and did some amazing work. The school is run by the IEUPR, our host, and the students are from the area of Fajardo. Oer group cleaned all the classrooms, got rid of the old leaves on the basketball court and playscape, and set up lunch for all the kids. We even made some friends with the students. Some of us will be going back tomorrow for more fun, painting and building.

The two additional teams stayed at the camp to clean up the basketball court. This included picking up weeds in the cracks of the court and filling in holes with cement. Covid has made it hard for the camp to continue to operate, so they need lots of help keeping up with maintenance. We also power washed an old building at the worksite as well. Tomorrow, some teams will be staying here again to paint older buildings, the basketball courts, benches and more.

Our last team visited an animal shelter and helped care for the dogs. They were very sweet and included some puppies!

Overall, it was a tiring, but very productive day, even though the gas broke while a group was cooking dinner!! Thankfully we received help and were able to make an amazing spaghetti dinner.

We’re so excited for the rest of the week to come and the memories that will last! And Wednesday is our cultural immersion day - rainforest hiking and exploring San Juan is going to be great.
