On another humid day that got up to 83 degrees, the five groups worked very hard on their respective work sites. The group “Playa Party” and “Pollos Pequeños” went to the IEUPR school to work on picking up trash, cleaning classrooms, painting walls and having lunch with students from the school. The head teacher of the school, Jainys told us what to do and where to go. The two teams split up into different tasks and started to clean. By luch time, we had our packed sandwiches, but the school lunch ladies worked hard to make everyone rice, beef, garbanzo beans and a salad. When lunch ended at 1:30, we took a break for about 20 minutes and got back to work.
Our Coquistadores team spent the morning working at the animal shelter and walked more than 40 dogs. They also sorted donations and learned more about the shelter, which used to be an AIDS clinic until government funding shut down and it was abandoned. Unfortunately many of the medications in stock were out of date and had to be thrown away. It was shocking to learn the whole facility operates with no electricity and only one water spigot despite having over 50 dogs across several buildings.
At lunch time the Coquistadores joined the Bad Bunnies and Pirates of the Caribbean painting at the camp. It seemed like we painted everything - the basketball uprights, the worship pavilion, the conference center and more. It was hot and many gallons of paint were used, but it was good to see so much change by the end of the day.
On the way home, we went to Walmart to buy basketballs to bring back to the school later in the week. After we left Walmart, we came back to the camp for about 20 minutes before going to the beach. The beach was beautiful and felt very good after a long hot day of work.
When returning from the beach, we were all worn out and some took showers while others prepared dinner or took leisure time. Dinner was prepared by Team Bad Bunnies, and was a delicious taco bar. While dinner was being prepared, some of the boys played an evening basketball game. After dinner, the group broke off into team meetings and discussed a bible verse pertaining to our central theme. When team meetings ended, we drifted off to our own rooms and got to bed to prepare for the big day ahead.
