We're getting ready to go to Luquillo, Puerto Rico!

By: Katie Morgan

The members of Senior High Fellowship are counting down the days as we prepare to travel to Luquillo, Puerto Rico for the 2023 mission trip. We will be spending the week working with Iglesia Evangelica Unida Puerto Rico helping out in the community and connecting with people that come from different backgrounds than our own.

Over the last few months, 35 SHF youth and advisors have worked to build teamwork as a group while learning essential skills for our week in Luquillo. Generous First Church members taught our group basic Spanish and Sign Language to help us communicate while on the trip, and showed us dog training skills that will be important for our time spent volunteering in an animal shelter. Our group additionally practiced using tools to prepare us for the construction projects we will be helping with. SHF has also taken time to educate ourselves on some of Puerto Rico’s culture and the things that will be most beneficial for this community.

We are excited to spend the week volunteering at a school, an animal shelter, and working on construction projects. Puerto Rico has been affected by multiple hurricanes in recent years, so we understand the importance in doing what we can to help repair homes and churches. The mission trip provides us the opportunity to bond with members of our own group and the community in Luquillo through our faith, which is one of the many things that makes our mission trip so special for all of us in SHF. Our group additionally can’t wait to experience the amazing Puerto Rican culture when we visit the nearby rainforests and the historic city of San Juan.
Fun games are always great for teambuilding before the trip.

This mission trip is possible because of the hard work that SHF members have put in to raise the money needed to fund it. Our determination to make this trip possible began back in October, when we spent a weekend volunteering at the First Church Potato Booth at the Apple Harvest Festival to raise these funds. This effort has continued in recent months as youth sell mission trip shares that help support the trip. This hard work will soon pay off as we travel to Luquillo and experience everything that this mission trip has to offer.

Thank you to all our supporters!
